What You Need to Know About the 3G Network Shutdown

What You Need to Know About the 3G Network Shutdown

As technology continues to evolve, so does the need to upgrade and phase out older systems to make way for new advancements. One significant change on the horizon is the shutdown of the 3G network. At E.Tel, we want to ensure that you are fully informed and prepared for this transition. Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming 3G network shutdown.

Why is the 3G Network Being Shut Down?

The 3G network, introduced in 1998, revolutionised mobile communication by enabling voice, text, and even video calls. However, with the advent of 4G in 2008 and now 5G, mobile technology has made significant advances, offering faster speeds and new applications like high-definition video streaming and augmented reality experiences. To optimise the use of the radio frequency spectrum and enhance network capacity and speed, the 3G network is being decommissioned.

When Will the Shutdown Occur?

Our network provider, Optus, has announced the planned shutdown of the 3G network on 28 October 2024. This aligns with similar initiatives by other major providers, such as Vodafone and Telstra, which will also complete their 3G shutdowns by the end of 2024.

How Will This Affect You?

If you have an older device that relies solely on 3G technology, it will no longer function once the 3G network is shut down. This includes certain older mobile phones, EFTPOS machines, medical devices, and security systems. It's essential to check your devices now to avoid any disruption.

What Should You Do?

Check Your Device Compatibility

To determine if your device is dependent on 3G, you can text the number '3' to '3498' or refer to your device’s manual. Devices that rely on 3G will need to be upgraded to ensure continued service.

  • Upgrade Your Device

3G devices cannot be adapted to newer networks. You will need to switch to a device compatible with 4G or 5G networks. This upgrade is necessary to continue using mobile services without interruption.

  • Plan Your Transition

Ensure you switch your device before the 3G shutdown date in September 2024. If you are unsure about your device's compatibility or need assistance with the upgrade process, E.Tel is here to help.

  • Impact on Older 4G Phones

Not all 4G phones will be affected by the 3G shutdown, but some older models that use 3G networks for voice calls will lose their ability to make voice calls. These phones will need to support Voice over LTE (VoLTE) to continue making calls over the 4G network. Most modern 4G phones and all 5G phones already support VoLTE.

What About Data Access?

The 3G shutdown will impact data access on 4G phones only for the slower 3G access, not the faster 4G access. Users of 5G phones will not be affected as they will continue to access data on 4G and 5G networks.
